This guitar has a pretty funny story behind it. About 6 years ago, I had finally completed and buffed out the 10 coats of Polyurethane finish on this, and was doing the final cleanup of the pickup cavities with my trusty Fordom flexshaft tool and a course grit sanding drum. My wife and the kids were in the shop making Christmas presents, and I went into the house to get something to drink. When I returned, my son Devon (who was 2 at the time) was hard at work 'helping me' with the project. He had my flex shaft tool in hand, and was busily carving away on the top of the guitar. I gasped, and quickly went into shock. Before anyone else caught what he was doing, Devon had managed to carve some seriously deep grooves into the top. He was crushed when he saw my reaction (after all, he was only trying to help, and maybe he was?). The end result was that I completed his carving job and installed an inlayed pickguard made from Spalted Maple Burl and black/white/black binding. I had to completely refinish the guitar, but the pickguard really sets the whole thing off, and is the first thing people comment on. It's funny how tragedies can sometimes turn into positive things when they're approached creatively. Anyway, the guitar has a three piece Bocote and Indian Rosewood neck, and a two-piece Birdseye and Curly Maple body with a Rosewood accent line. It has two humbuckers from a '69 Les Paul Custom and a polymer film pickup in the bridge. I rarely use the humbuckers, and plan on removing them and replacing them with dummy covers to eliminate the magnetic drag on the strings. I'm building another 12 string at this time, so this one might be available for sale. Contact me for details if interested.
